Last updated: 03/09/2026
These Terms explain the rules for using Lamplight.
Please read them before creating an account or purchasing a subscription.
If you are under 18, we encourage you to read these Terms with a parent or guardian.
Nothing in these Terms affects legal rights that cannot lawfully be excluded or restricted.
1. About Lamplight
Lamplight is a writing and learning application designed to help users explore vocabulary, language, creative-writing techniques and ideas.
Lamplight may provide definitions, examples, suggestions, writing techniques, AI-generated material and other learning features.
Lamplight is intended to assist your learning and creativity. It is not designed to replace your own judgement, creativity or work.
Lamplight is operated by:
Step Up I.C.P.E

2. Who may use Lamplight?
Lamplight may be used by adults, children and young people, subject to these Terms.
If you are under 18, we encourage you to involve a parent or guardian when creating or managing your account.
If you are under 13, particular data-protection requirements may apply. Our Privacy Policy and Privacy Notice for Children & Parents explain these in more detail.
Where a paid subscription requires a legally binding purchase by an adult, the subscription must be purchased or authorised by a parent, guardian or another person legally able to enter into that purchase.
3. Your account
You must provide information reasonably necessary to create and maintain your account.
You are responsible for taking reasonable steps to keep your login details secure.
You must not:
deliberately give another person access to your account where this is prohibited;
attempt to access somebody else's account without permission;
deliberately provide materially false account information;
interfere with the operation or security of Lamplight;
attempt to bypass security, payment or usage restrictions; or
use automated means to access Lamplight in a manner we have not authorised where doing so places an unreasonable burden on or interferes with the service.
If you believe somebody has accessed your account without permission, contact us at hello@lamplightapp.com.
4. Free and paid features
Lamplight may provide both free and paid features.
Features available under each plan, together with applicable prices and billing periods, will be displayed before purchase.
We may change the features available under different plans from time to time. Where a change materially affects an existing paid subscription, we will provide information about that change and any rights or options available to the subscriber where required by law.
5. Subscriptions
Some Lamplight features may require a paid subscription.
Before a subscription is purchased, we will provide information about the price, billing frequency and other material conditions applying to the subscription.
Where a subscription automatically renews, this will be made clear before purchase.
By purchasing an automatically renewing subscription, the purchaser authorises the applicable subscription charge to be taken at the intervals disclosed at the time of purchase until the subscription is cancelled or otherwise ends.
Subscriptions may be cancelled using the cancellation method made available by Lamplight or the relevant payment or app-store provider.
The consequences and effective date of cancellation will be explained when the subscription is purchased or cancelled.
Nothing in these Terms removes cancellation, refund or other rights provided by applicable consumer law.
6. Purchases involving children
A child must not make a paid purchase where they do not have the legal capacity or appropriate permission to do so.
Where appropriate, Lamplight may require an adult to complete or authorise a subscription.
If you believe a child has made a payment without appropriate permission, contact us promptly at:
hello@lamplightapp.com
7. Payments
Payments may be processed by Stripe, an app-store provider or another payment provider identified before payment is completed.
The payment provider may apply additional payment terms.
Lamplight does not receive or store full debit or credit card details where payment information is entered directly into the payment provider's system.
8. Cancellations and refunds
Your statutory consumer rights are not affected by this section.
Fourteen-day money-back guarantee. If you buy a Lamplight subscription, you can ask us for a full refund within fourteen days of your payment, for any reason. You don't need to explain why. To request a refund, contact us at hello@lamplightapp.com. We'll refund what you paid, to your original payment method where possible, without undue delay and within fourteen days of accepting your request. This guarantee applies to your first payment and to each automatic renewal payment.
After the fourteen days. Once the fourteen-day window for a payment has passed, that payment is non-refundable except where the law requires otherwise. You can still cancel at any time to stop future payments. Your subscription stays active until the end of the period you've already paid for, and won't renew after that.
Cancelling future renewals. You can cancel at any time by emailing us at hello@lamplightapp.com. Cancelling stops future charges. It doesn't by itself refund a payment already made, except under the fourteen-day guarantee above.
9. AI-generated content
Some Lamplight features use artificial intelligence.
AI-generated information can sometimes be:
incorrect;
incomplete;
inappropriate;
unusual;
repetitive;
outdated; or
similar to material generated for other users or material that already exists.
We therefore do not guarantee that every AI-generated definition, example, phrase, sentence, suggestion or idea will be accurate, suitable, original or unique.
You remain responsible for deciding whether and how to use AI-generated material.
Important information should be checked against an appropriate reliable source.
Younger users should ask a parent, guardian, teacher or another trusted adult where appropriate.
10. Schoolwork and examinations
Lamplight is designed to help users develop their own writing skills.
It is not intended to enable users to misrepresent AI-generated work as their own where doing so would breach applicable academic rules.
Users remain responsible for work they submit to:
schools;
colleges;
universities;
examination boards;
competitions;
publishers; or
other organisations.
Those organisations may have their own rules governing the use of artificial intelligence.
You must follow the rules that apply to your particular school, course, assessment, examination or other activity.
Lamplight does not guarantee any particular grade, examination result, assessment outcome or improvement in academic performance.
11. Your writing and intellectual property
You retain the rights you have in original writing and other original material you create and submit to Lamplight.
Using Lamplight does not transfer ownership of your original writing to us.
You give Lamplight a limited permission to host, store, copy, transmit and otherwise process your material only to the extent reasonably necessary to operate Lamplight, provide features you request, maintain and secure the service, and comply with applicable law.
This permission does not give Lamplight ownership of your original material.
You must not knowingly submit material in a way that infringes another person's copyright, privacy or other legal rights.
12. AI suggestions and originality
AI-generated material may not be unique.
The same or similar output may be generated for different users, and generated material may resemble existing expressions or material.
Lamplight therefore does not guarantee that an AI-generated word, phrase, sentence, idea or other suggestion:
is unique;
has not previously existed;
will not be generated for somebody else; or
qualifies for copyright or other intellectual-property protection.
You are responsible for deciding how AI-generated suggestions are incorporated into your own work.
13. Acceptable use
You must not use Lamplight:
for unlawful purposes;
to threaten, bully, stalk or harass another person;
deliberately to create or distribute unlawful or seriously harmful material;
to obtain, expose or misuse another person's private information without lawful authority;
to impersonate another person fraudulently;
to infringe another person's intellectual-property rights;
to introduce malware or malicious code;
to interfere with Lamplight's systems or security;
to attempt unauthorised access to accounts, systems or data; or
in a manner that seriously harms other users or the operation of the service.
When deciding how to respond to suspected breaches involving children, we will take account of the circumstances and the interests of the child where appropriate.
14. Suspending or restricting accounts
We may reasonably restrict, suspend or terminate access where:
these Terms have been seriously or repeatedly breached;
an account presents a security risk;
we reasonably believe the service is being used unlawfully;
payment for a paid service remains outstanding;
we are required to do so by law; or
action is reasonably necessary to protect users, Lamplight or others from serious harm.
Where appropriate and lawful, we will seek to provide an explanation and a reasonable opportunity to address the issue before permanent termination.
Immediate action may be taken where reasonably necessary to protect security, users or others.
15. Availability and changes to Lamplight
We aim to keep Lamplight reliable and available, but online services can experience maintenance, faults, interruptions and events outside our reasonable control.
We do not promise that Lamplight will be continuously available or entirely error-free.
We may update, improve, add, remove or change features.
Where a change materially affects a paid service, we will comply with applicable consumer law and provide any information or remedies required.
16. Third-party services
Some Lamplight functionality may depend on third-party services, including payment, authentication, hosting and artificial-intelligence providers.
Those providers may operate under their own terms and privacy policies where they provide services directly to you.
We are not responsible for independent services provided by third parties except to the extent responsibility cannot lawfully be excluded.
17. Our responsibility to you
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability where doing so would be unlawful.
In particular, nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability for matters for which liability cannot legally be excluded or restricts statutory consumer rights.
Lamplight is a writing and learning tool. AI-generated suggestions should be assessed using your own judgement and checked where accuracy is important.
To the extent permitted by law, we are not responsible for losses caused solely by a user's unreasonable reliance on AI-generated material after appropriate limitations have been clearly explained.
Nothing in this section affects remedies or rights available to consumers under applicable law.
18. Privacy
Our Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store and share personal information.
Because children and young people may use Lamplight, we also provide a Privacy Notice for Children & Parents explaining important privacy information in simpler language.
19. Ending your account
You may stop using Lamplight at any time.
You may request deletion of your account by contacting hello@lamplightapp.com
Deletion of personal information is dealt with in accordance with our Privacy Policy and applicable law.
Ending an account does not automatically entitle a user to a refund, except under the fourteen-day guarantee in Section eight, unless applicable law or the terms applying to the purchase provide otherwise.
20. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms when Lamplight changes or where legal or regulatory requirements change.
The current version will be made available through Lamplight or its website.
Where a material change affects existing users' rights or paid subscriptions, we will provide reasonable notice where required and explain any rights or options available.
21. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
If you are a consumer, this does not remove mandatory legal protections available to you under the law applying where you live.
Nothing in these Terms prevents a consumer from exercising rights relating to the courts or dispute-resolution processes available to them under applicable law.
