Lamplight — Privacy Notice for Children & Parents

Last updated: 25/10/2026

Welcome to Lamplight 👋

Lamplight is here to help you become a better and more creative writer.

You can use it to explore words, learn writing techniques, develop ideas and save useful words and lines in your own notebook.

Children and young people can use Lamplight, so we think it is especially important that you understand what happens to your information.

We've tried to explain the important things simply here.

You can also read our full Privacy Policy if you want more detail.

For Young People

1. What does Lamplight know about me?

When you use Lamplight, we may know things such as:

We don't need to know everything about you.

We try to collect only the information we need to make Lamplight work properly and safely.

2. Why does Lamplight need my information?

We mainly use your information to:

We don't sell your personal information.

3. Is my notebook private?

Your Lamplight notebook is connected to your account so you can save favourite words, phrases and writing ideas.

Your notebook is intended to be private to your account.

It isn't intended to be publicly displayed to other Lamplight users.

But you should still think carefully about what you save.

Try not to put private information into your notebook when it doesn't need to be there.

For example, don't save things such as:

4. What happens when I ask the AI for ideas?

Some parts of Lamplight use artificial intelligence, or AI.

When you ask Lamplight for a word, phrase, example or writing suggestion, the information needed to answer your request may be sent to an external AI provider.

That provider helps Lamplight create the answer.

This is why you shouldn't tell the AI private things it doesn't need to know.

For example, you don't need to write:

“My name is Sam Jones, I live at 25 Example Street and I need a metaphor about my house.”

You can simply write:

“Give me a metaphor describing a house.”

You can get the writing help without giving away private information.

5. Can AI make mistakes?

Yes.

AI can be incredibly useful, but it isn't always right.

Lamplight might sometimes suggest something that is:

Think of Lamplight as a writing assistant, not the teacher.

If something looks wrong or the answer really matters, check it with a teacher, parent, guardian or another reliable source.

6. Does Lamplight write my schoolwork for me?

That's not what Lamplight is designed to do.

Lamplight is designed to help you become the writer.

It can help you discover techniques, vocabulary and possibilities you might not have thought about.

You decide what to use.

You decide what to change.

And you write the final piece.

Your school, teacher, college or examination board might have rules about using AI for homework, coursework and examinations.

You should follow those rules.

7. Who owns the writing I create?

Your original writing doesn't become Lamplight's property simply because you wrote or saved it using Lamplight.

If you create your own story, description, poem or other original writing, you keep the rights you have in that work.

Lamplight needs permission to process and store your writing when this is necessary to provide the features you use, but that does not make Lamplight the owner of your original writing.

AI suggestions are different.

AI-generated suggestions might not be completely original or unique. The same or similar suggestion might be given to somebody else or might resemble something that already exists.

That's another good reason to use Lamplight for ideas and inspiration rather than simply copying everything it suggests.

8. Does Lamplight sell my information?

No.

Lamplight does not sell your personal information.

We also do not sell children's personal information.

We don't use children's writing, searches or notebooks to build targeted advertising profiles about them.

Cookies for our ads

Lamplight has adverts on Google and Reddit. When you first open Lamplight, we ask if we can use cookies to see which advert brought you here. If you are under 13, please ask a parent or carer before you choose.

If you say "No thanks", we don't use these cookies. If you say "Accept", Google and Reddit learn things like which pages you visited and whether you made an account, but never your writing, your searches or your notebook.

You can change your mind any time from our full privacy policy.

9. Who else might receive my information?

Lamplight uses other companies to help provide the service.

For example, companies may help us with:

We only share information when there is a reason to do so, as explained in our full Privacy Policy.

10. What if I'm under 13?

There are special data-protection rules that can apply to younger children.

If Lamplight needs to rely on your consent for something and the law requires permission from a parent or guardian because you are under 13, we will take reasonable steps to get that permission.

This doesn't mean your parent or guardian automatically owns your information or your writing.

Children have privacy rights too.

11. Can I see, change or delete my information?

You have rights over your personal information.

Depending on the situation, you or someone legally acting for you may be able to ask us to:

You can contact us at:

If you don't understand something about your information, you can also ask a parent, guardian, teacher or another trusted adult to help you.

For Parents and Guardians

Lamplight and children's privacy

Lamplight is an educational writing application intended to be suitable for children and young people as well as adults.

We recognise that children's personal information requires particular protection.

Our aim is to use only information reasonably necessary to provide and protect the Lamplight service and to consider the best interests of children when making decisions about their personal information.

Our full Privacy Policy contains the detailed legal information about our processing.

What information may be stored?

Depending on how your child uses Lamplight, this may include:

We do not sell children's personal information.

AI processing

Some Lamplight features use third-party artificial-intelligence services.

Text entered into an AI-powered feature may therefore be sent to an external AI provider, such as Anthropic, for the purpose of generating the requested result.

We encourage all users — and particularly children — not to enter unnecessary personal or sensitive information into AI prompts.

Lamplight does not use children's saved notebooks to train its own AI models.

Further information about third-party AI processing is provided in our full Privacy Policy.

Children under 13

UK data-protection law contains specific requirements where an online service offered directly to a child relies upon consent to process personal information.

Where Lamplight relies on consent in circumstances covered by those requirements, we will take reasonable steps to obtain or verify parental authorisation for a user under 13.

Consent is not necessarily the lawful basis for every processing activity undertaken by Lamplight.

Our full Privacy Policy explains the lawful bases we may use in more detail.

Payments

Paid subscriptions used by children should be purchased or authorised by a parent, guardian or another adult legally able to make the purchase.

Payments may be processed by Stripe or another provider identified when the purchase is made.

Lamplight does not receive or store full payment-card details where those details are entered directly into the payment provider's system.

Google sign-in

If Google sign-in is used, Google may provide Lamplight with basic information needed to create or identify the user's account, such as their name, email address and account identifier.

Lamplight does not receive the user's Google password.

Helping children use AI safely

We encourage parents and guardians to talk to children about sensible use of AI.

Children should understand that AI can be useful without always being correct.

They should also avoid entering unnecessary information such as:

Lamplight is intended to encourage children to develop their own vocabulary, ideas and writing rather than simply replace their work with AI-generated material.

Our Simple Privacy Promise

When a young person uses Lamplight, we want them to remember five things:

1. Your original writing remains yours.

2. We don't sell your personal information.

3. Don't tell the AI private things it doesn't need to know.

4. AI can make mistakes, so think about its suggestions rather than automatically trusting them.

5. If you're worried or confused, ask a parent, guardian, teacher or another trusted adult.

Questions or concerns?

If you are a child, parent or guardian and have a question about privacy or information stored by Lamplight, please contact us.
